Hyderabad’s Historic Monuments to Be Linked with Musi River Rejuvenation Project

Several historic monuments and civic landmarks in Hyderabad have been identified for integration into the proposed Musi River rejuvenation project, aimed at combining river restoration with heritage conservation. Authorities plan to develop a cultural tourism corridor along the Musi River, highlighting the historical significance of the river in shaping the city’s urban and cultural identity.

The heritage concept map prepared by the Musi Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (MRDCL) includes prominent sites such as Golconda Fort, Qutb Shahi Tombs, Taramati Baradari, Purana Pul, Government City College, Mecca Masjid, Charminar, Telangana High Court, Osmania General Hospital, and the historic British Residency at Koti. These landmarks represent different eras of Hyderabad’s history and showcase the city’s architectural diversity.

The concept was unveiled by E. V. Narasimha Reddy, Managing Director of MRDCL, with the aim of connecting these heritage sites through tourism routes and heritage-focused public spaces. Many of these monuments developed historically along the banks of the Musi River, particularly in the Old City area.

The Musi River rejuvenation project covers nearly 55 kilometres of the river corridor and includes plans for river cleaning, ecological restoration, landscaped walkways, recreational zones, and improved public access to the riverbanks.

Officials believe that integrating heritage conservation with urban development will promote cultural tourism while preserving Hyderabad’s historic character. The project is also expected to improve environmental conditions and create vibrant public spaces that celebrate the city’s rich heritage.
