Tensions have escalated between Telangana and Andhra Pradesh over alleged unauthorised power generation at the Srisailam Dam. Telangana Excise Minister Jupally Krishna Rao has accused the Andhra Pradesh government of violating established water-sharing norms by generating electricity even when reservoir levels are below the prescribed limit.
According to the minister, rules clearly state that power generation at Srisailam should be halted once the water level drops below 834 feet (254.2 metres) to prioritise drinking water and irrigation needs. However, he alleged that Andhra Pradesh continues to draw water for power production despite these restrictions, raising concerns over water security for Telangana.
The issue is significant as the Srisailam reservoir plays a crucial role in supplying water for both states, especially during periods of low rainfall. Telangana officials argue that such actions could impact drinking water availability and agricultural requirements in the region.
This development has once again highlighted the ongoing inter-state disputes over river water sharing, particularly involving the Krishna River basin, where both states have competing demands for power generation and irrigation.
