India’s First Petroglyph Conservation Park Launched in Ladakh

By Soniya:

In a significant move to preserve India’s ancient heritage, the foundation stone for the country’s first Petroglyph Conservation Park was laid in Ladakh on the banks of the Indus River. The project was inaugurated by Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena on the occasion of World Heritage Day, underlining the importance of safeguarding centuries-old rock art.

Petroglyphs—prehistoric carvings etched on rock surfaces—offer valuable insights into early human life, culture and migration. Ladakh is home to nearly 400 such sites, many of which face threats from infrastructure development, environmental factors and unregulated tourism. The conservation park aims to relocate vulnerable carvings and preserve them in a secure, curated environment.

The initiative is supported by a collaboration between the Archaeological Survey of India and the Ladakh administration, ensuring scientific preservation and long-term protection. Beyond conservation, the project is expected to promote heritage tourism and encourage community participation, positioning Ladakh as a model for balancing development with cultural preservation.
