India-Africa Relations Explained: Why the Global South Is Becoming More Powerful

India is set to host the 4th India-Africa Forum Summit in New Delhi on 31 May 2026, marking one of the most significant diplomatic engagements between India and African nations in recent years. The summit is expected to bring together African Heads of State, ministers, and senior officials to strengthen cooperation across trade, defence, technology, energy, climate action, and development partnerships.

The summit process will begin with senior officials’ meetings on 28 May, followed by a Foreign Ministers’ meeting on 29 May and the leaders’ summit on 31 May. Discussions are expected to focus on economic growth, maritime security, critical minerals, agriculture, healthcare, education, renewable energy, and digital infrastructure.

India and African nations are also expected to adopt a joint declaration aligning India’s Vision 2047 with Africa’s Agenda 2063, reflecting long-term cooperation between the two sides.

Africa has emerged as an increasingly important partner for India due to its growing economies, young population, strategic resources, and rising geopolitical influence. Over the past decade, India has expanded its diplomatic outreach across Africa by opening 17 new missions, increasing its presence to 46 African countries.

The India-Africa partnership has gained importance within the broader idea of the “Global South,” where developing countries are seeking stronger cooperation on issues such as climate justice, food security, reform of global institutions, digital development, and energy access.

Economic ties between India and Africa have also grown rapidly. Bilateral trade currently stands at around 85 billion dollars, while India has extended more than 10 billion dollars in Lines of Credit to African countries for infrastructure and development projects. India is also among Africa’s largest trading partners and investors.

In recent years, India has increased cooperation with African nations in digital governance, healthcare, education, renewable energy, and technology partnerships. Experts believe the 2026 summit could further strengthen India’s role as a major development partner for Africa and reinforce the growing influence of the Global South in international politics and economics.
