Govt Extends ECHS Benefits to Medically Boarded-Out Cadets

The Union government has approved the extension of the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) to officer cadets who are medically invalidated during training due to disabilities sustained or aggravated in the course of military training.

Previously excluded as they did not hold ex-servicemen status, such cadets will now receive cashless and capless healthcare at over 448 ECHS polyclinics and 3,000 empanelled hospitals nationwide. They will also be exempted from the one-time subscription fee of ₹1.2 lakh, ensuring accessible medical support.

This benefit applies to cadets from premier institutions like the NDA, IMA, and OTA, covering both current and future cases. The move supplements existing financial aid such as ex-gratia payments and disability awards, offering comprehensive support for those who sacrifice their health during training.

Launched in 2003, the ECHS already supports around 63 lakh beneficiaries. With this extension, the scheme expands its reach to ensure better rehabilitation, dignity, and care for India’s young military trainees.
