Kalinjar Fort has been officially designated as a National Geo-Heritage Site by the Geological Survey of India, bringing national and global attention to its rare geological significance.
Located in the Banda district of Uttar Pradesh, the site is renowned for showcasing billions of years of Earth’s history. Its most remarkable feature is the Eparchaean Unconformity, where ancient 2.5-billion-year-old Bundelkhand granite lies beneath 1.2-billion-year-old Kaimur sandstone, clearly revealing a massive geological time gap.
Beyond geology, Kalinjar Fort holds immense historical importance. Built atop a hill, its natural rock formations provided strong defensive advantages, making it a strategic stronghold for various dynasties over centuries.
The geo-heritage status is expected to significantly boost tourism, research, and local development. Authorities plan to link Kalinjar with nearby destinations like Khajuraho and Chitrakoot, creating a vibrant tourism circuit.
This recognition not only highlights India’s rich geological legacy but also strengthens efforts to preserve and promote its natural heritage for future generations.
