WMO Warns Earth’s Climate System is ‘Flashing Red’ Amid Rising Global Warming

The World Meteorological Organization has issued a stark warning in 2026, stating that the Earth’s climate system is “flashing red” due to accelerating global warming. Its latest report reveals that the planet’s energy imbalance has reached a 65-year high, meaning more heat is being trapped than released into space.

A major concern is that oceans are absorbing over 90% of excess heat, leading to rising sea temperatures and long-term climate instability. This has contributed to record ocean warming over the past decade, with effects expected to continue even if emissions are reduced.

The report also highlights record-high greenhouse gas levels, with carbon dioxide concentrations at their highest in millions of years. This has accelerated glacier melting and sea-level rise, which has increased by about 11 cm since 1993, posing serious risks to coastal regions.

In addition, oceans are becoming more acidic due to carbon absorption, threatening marine life and global food security. Rising global temperatures—now about 1.43°C above pre-industrial levels—are driving extreme weather events such as heatwaves, floods, and droughts.

The findings emphasize that climate change is not just an environmental issue but also a socio-economic challenge, affecting health, jobs, and livelihoods worldwide. The report calls for urgent global action to reduce emissions and address the growing climate crisis.
