India Approves Updated NDC Targets for 2035 to Boost Climate Action

The Union Cabinet, led by Narendra Modi, has approved India’s updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) for the period 2031–2035, to be submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. These revised targets reflect India’s enhanced commitment to tackling climate change while balancing development priorities and progressing toward its 2070 net-zero goal.

Under the new NDCs, India aims to reduce the emissions intensity of its GDP by 47%, achieve 60% of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources, and create a carbon sink of 3.5–4 billion tonnes through forests and tree cover. These ambitious goals build on India’s earlier achievements, including significant progress in reducing emission intensity and expanding clean energy capacity ahead of schedule.

The updated strategy places strong emphasis on renewable energy expansion and green technologies, supported by initiatives such as the Green Hydrogen Mission, PM Surya Ghar Yojana, and solar-based schemes. India is also strengthening global cooperation through platforms like the International Solar Alliance and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
