The Government of India has established the Bureau of Port Security (BoPS) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to strengthen security across the country’s ports, ships, and maritime infrastructure. Modeled on the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), BoPS will serve as India’s apex regulatory authority for maritime security, addressing both traditional security challenges and emerging cyber threats.
Initially functioning under the Directorate General of Maritime Administration (DGMA), the Bureau will oversee port and ship security standards, conduct inspections, monitor compliance with national and international regulations, and facilitate intelligence sharing among stakeholders. A dedicated cyber security division will safeguard port IT systems, protect digital infrastructure, and enhance resilience against cyberattacks on maritime operations.
The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has been designated as the Recognised Security Organisation (RSO) for port facilities. CISF will conduct security assessments, prepare Port Facility Security Plans, evaluate vulnerabilities, and train private security personnel to ensure standardized security practices across Indian ports. The establishment of BoPS marks a significant step in strengthening India’s maritime security architecture and supporting the safe, secure, and efficient functioning of its rapidly expanding port sector.
