India to Conduct Nationwide Security War Mock Drills on May 7 Amid Rising Tensions with Pakistan
New Delhi, May 6 — The Central government has directed multiple states to conduct security war mock drills on Wednesday, May 7, aimed at strengthening civil defense preparedness in light of escalating tensions with Pakistan following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack on April 22.
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) stated that these drills are critical for ensuring effective civilian response in the event of a hostile strike. The nationwide exercise will include the activation of air raid sirens, crash blackouts, camouflaging of vital infrastructure, and evacuation plan rehearsals. Civilians will also be trained in basic civil defense measures to improve readiness during emergency situations.
The security move comes in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 civilians — the majority of them tourists — sparking outrage and high-level security deliberations in New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been holding continuous meetings with senior defense officials to assess India’s strategic response options.
The MHA has called for active participation from local administrations, educational institutions, and civil defense personnel to ensure the smooth execution and effectiveness of the mock drills. These exercises are part of broader efforts to boost national preparedness amid the increasing threat perception.
