Fire Safety Week 2026 Launched to Strengthen Hospital Safety Standards in India

By Soniya:

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched Fire Safety Week 2026 from May 4 to May 10, aiming to strengthen safety standards across healthcare facilities in the country. The initiative began with a nationwide pledge led by Punya Salila Srivastava, highlighting the urgent need for improved fire preparedness in hospitals.

A key feature of the campaign is the introduction of the “National Guidelines on Fire and Life Safety in Healthcare Facilities.” These guidelines provide a structured framework covering risk assessment, infrastructure safety, emergency response systems, and staff training. Special focus has been placed on high-risk areas such as Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Neonatal ICUs (NICUs), and operation theatres, where fire incidents can have severe consequences.

The week-long programme includes nationwide activities such as fire safety audits, mock drills, evacuation exercises, and awareness campaigns in hospitals and medical colleges. These efforts aim to build preparedness among healthcare workers and administrators while promoting a culture of safety.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has also supported the initiative by emphasising a proactive and system-based approach to disaster management. Experts note that hospitals are particularly vulnerable to fire risks due to oxygen systems, electrical equipment, and the limited mobility of patients.

Overall, Fire Safety Week 2026 reflects a coordinated national effort to enhance emergency preparedness, reduce risks, and ensure safer healthcare environments across India.
