India Launches RELIEF Scheme 2026 to Shield Exporters from West Asia Disruptions

Amid rising geopolitical tensions in West Asia and disruptions near the Strait of Hormuz, the Government of India has launched the RELIEF Scheme 2026 to safeguard exporters from escalating logistics costs and risks.

Announced on March 19, 2026, under the Export Promotion Mission, the scheme aims to provide financial protection against rising freight charges, insurance premiums, and supply chain disruptions caused by ongoing regional instability.

The decision follows increased shipping challenges in the Gulf region, including vessel diversions, port congestion, and higher operational risks. To monitor the situation, an Inter-Ministerial Group (IMG) was activated earlier in March to assess impacts and recommend timely measures.

Under the scheme, exporters insured with the Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India Ltd. will receive 100% risk coverage for shipments between February 14 and March 15, 2026, and up to 95% coverage for exports from March 16 to June 15, 2026. Additionally, MSME exporters without ECGC insurance are eligible for up to 50% reimbursement, capped at ₹50 lakh per exporter.

The ECGC will act as the nodal agency, handling verification, claims, and fund disbursement through a real-time monitoring system. The scheme covers exports to key West Asian and Gulf countries, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Israel.

Officials stated that the initiative reflects a proactive policy approach to protect India’s export sector and ensure continuity of trade during global uncertainties.
