India’s crude sourcing leaned heavily on Russian oil in August 2025, with imports rising to 2 million barrels per day (bpd)—up from 1.6 million bpd in July. Data from Kpler shows Russian oil made up 38% of India’s total crude imports (5.2 million bpd) in the first half of August.
While imports from Iraq fell to 730,000 bpd and Saudi Arabia to 526,000 bpd, Indian refiners capitalized on discounted Russian crude to stabilize domestic fuel prices and curb inflation.
Despite Western pressure to scale back, New Delhi continues to stress that its oil purchases are guided by energy security and national interest. Russia has now become India’s top supplier, reshaping the country’s energy basket and intensifying competition with OPEC members.
